What is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is the process of removing imperfections and blemishes from a vehicle’s paint work and restoring it to its original condition. The process is complex, time consuming, and labor-intensive but when done by a professional, the results are impressive.
If you have noticed scratches or what may look like a swirl on your car, paint correction in Roanoke, VA will fix that and make the paint free and clear again. Once it is free of blemishes, it’s a good time to consider a protective coating such as ceramic coating or paint protection film.
Why is the paint correction process so lengthy? Well, it entails several steps to get it just right, especially if you want the paint truly corrected rather than merely have the scratches filled. A proper paint correction job can take anywhere from 5 to 30 hours depending on the damage that needs corrected.
The first step is always a thorough wash to remove all loose dirt and debris from the car’s paint surface. This is done with gentle soap formulated for car care. Then the vehicle is dried with soft towels before moving to the next step.
Next, an iron remover is sprayed to further decontaminate the paint. This is rinsed off before moving to the next step which is the clay bar. Claying the paintwork will safely remove any stubborn surface contaminants that the wash was not able to remove.
Now we can see what we’re working with. All of the previous steps have cleared away any residue from the car’s surface and what remains is the true condition of the vehicle’s paintwork. A thorough inspection will help determine what kind of paint correction is needed. Depending on the depth of scratches and imperfections, various techniques will be needed to level the paint and achieve best results.
Each vehicle is unique, and our detailing specialists can determine the best course of action, but generally polishing and buffing are required next in the process. In some more serious cases, wet-sanding and re-leveling is provided for deep scratches. Another several rounds of polishing and buffing will be needed to get the paint looking just right. Starting with a rougher grain and working to a finer one, the paint is polished and buffed 2 to 4 times.
Finally, each panel of the car is wiped down with a degreasing solution such as isopropyl alcohol. This dissolves any remaining oily residue and reveals the final finish, properly corrected. A professionally corrected paint surface will shine and reflect clearly now that there are no imperfections to scatter the light.
